| Julian of Norwich was an anchoress and a visionary whose teachings
direct our attention to many concepts of theology that have been largely
suppressed or ignored but which can heighten our awareness of abuse and
misconceptions in society, the continuance of which have been prolonged
through misogynistic ideologies, states author Robert H.
Calderwood. And in Julian's Challenge, he reviews Julian's life
and takes a cursory look at the times in which she lived, while he
attempts to present her teachings as a challenge to what has become the
"acceptable party line' of the modern church.
Here is Julian's discovery of God as Mother, This being an integral part of that which we believe God to be. Extending this vision is a scripturally based Sophia of God and the great I AM. Inherent in Julian's teachings, the author feels, is a logical transition to the present-day realities of abortion and the patriarchal treatment of women today. It is a challenge, he believes, that deserves an intelligent, sensitive, and loving response. |
